A Washington, DC resident for many years, Chilean Artist Raimundo Rubio Huidobro now lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. A classically trained painter, his work spans periods that reflect a thought process factoring his mastery of classical painting with such movements as post-surrealism and color field abstraction.  His work has been credited with moving toward a new approach to surface, depth, and color.

Rubio Huidobro's work is included in museum and private collections internationally.  In Washington, his work is included in the collection of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the World Bank and other corporate collections.

Rubio was at the forefront of a post-color field movement in Washington that rooted itself in the late 1980s and early 1990s.  Prior to this period, the Washington color school led by Gene Davis and other art luminaries in DC had made a “legitimate” contribution to the art world at-large. 

Rubio was one of the leaders of this group of DC artists who individually came to realize that transplantation of comfortable roots to an unknown and super-challenging New York community was part and parcel of the whole idea of being a respected artist.

After arriving in New York a decade ago, Rubio was included in the Surface Tension show at the Chelsea Art Museum, curated by Manon Slome.  He was also included in an exhibition for the 2002 Biennial of El Museo del Barrio in New York. The Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington acquired a work which was included in an installation of works from the permanent collection curated by Jonathan Binstock, Earthly and Spiritual Pleasures: Works from the Collection (2003).
