Kathy Caraccio
Kathy Caraccio is a master printer, artist, curator and professor. Caraccio has a BFA from Herbert Lehman College. She was trained in etching color print with Maria Samosa (El Museo del Barrio, NYC, 1972-3), in viscosity printing with Arun Bose and Krishna Reddy (NYC, 1972-3), papermaking by Zarina Hashmi (NYC, 1979), and in Hanga (Japanese water based woodblock printing) with Sensei Toshi Yoshida (Nagano – Japan, 1984). In 1977, Kathy started the K. Caraccio Printing Studio in NYC.
As an exhibiting artist herself, Kathy stays excited about making art and meeting aesthetic challenges. She has taught printmaking at NYU, Columbia University, Parsons/New School, Pratt and currently at the National Academy. Kathy's work is in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Library of Congress, The Portland Art Museum, The Achenbach Foundation for the Graphic Arts, the Fine Arts Museum of California, the New York Public Library (42nd St.), and The Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum. Kathy has had solo shows in the USA, Japan, Korea, and Puerto Rico.
Kathy Caraccio apprenticed for four years as a master printer at Bob Blackburn’s The Printmaking Workshop, Inc. and with Sensei Toshi Yoshida in Japan. She established her studio in 1977 on West 26th Street with one Charles Brand press. In 1993, the studio relocated to Chelsea, and in July of 2005, the studio moved to its current location on West 39th Street. It has since taken on dual roles as both printshop and gallery, housing Kathy's collection of over 5,000 original prints and handmade books, which she uses as a unique teaching tool and as a source for inspiration and education. K Caraccio studio is invested in non acid techniques and green printing materials.
In the last nine years, Kathy’s studio has shifted from its earlier focus on collaborative plate-making and editioning to non-acid plate-making and monotype projects using non-traditional techniques, including pochoir, silk aquatint, and hanga (Japanese water-based woodblock printing). In addition to printing for established artists and publishers, K. Caraccio Studio specializes in projects with emerging artists and first-time printmakers. Kathy fosters creative inspiration while utilizing her skills in a broad spectrum of stylistic trends and printmaking techniques. The studio also cultivates an apprenticeship program for artists interested in printmaking, which has drawn over 100 interns from all walks of life.
Among the artists Kathy has editioned for are: Ed Baynard, Romare Bearden, Brodsky and Utkin, Scott Campbel, Mel Bochner, Sol LeWitt, and Louise Nevelson. Among the artists Kathy continues to collaborate are George Nama, Lynn Newcomb, Michail Magaril, Adam Pitt, Stephen Fredericks, Dave Collins, Emily Trueblood, Scott Campbell, Robin Shern, Ellen Weider, Bea Bardin and Tanja Softic.
