Charles J. Fox, the name signed on the portrait, is the pseudonym of Mr. Leo Fox, a Westchester, NY entrepreneur who for many years commissioned portraits of leading figures in business, society, and government and furnished portraits under his pseudonym signature. The portraits, signed C. J. Fox, were executed from photographs by New York artist Irving Resnikoff (1897-1988), during a forty-year association with Fox.

Resnikoff, born Isaac Resnikoff in Theodosia, Russia, is said to have had studied art at the Imperial Art Academy in St. Petersburg. Together with his parents, Resnikoff immigrated to Turkey in 1918 and then to the United States in 1923. Resnikoff settled in New York's upper West Side and began a career as a portrait painter, in association with Leo Fox. In parallel, he created a body of Cubist work which neither sold well nor was exhibited.
