Michael ParchmentJamaica, 1957
Michael Parchment is a self-taught artist who actively exhibits, participates and wins in Jamaican national art competitions. His creative work is inspired by timeless parables from Christian and Rastafarian mythology, by contemporary events, such as the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York or the Olympic Games in Athens, and by social issues, such as domestic violence or spread of HIV.
Parchment reflects on the philosphical teachings and the current historical events from the perspective of Afro-Jamaican popular subculture. Of the African cultures that inspire his style can be mentioned Ethiopian icon-painting. At the same time, Parchment’s imagery is completely original, and his compositions are highly imaginative.
