Thomas Salvatore Fricano

BiographyThomas Salvatore Fricano was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 28, 1930. He studied art at Bradley University in Peoria and got his BFA there and an MFA at the University of Illinois, Urbana in 1956. Fricano returned to Bradley as an instructor in printmaking between 1958 and 63. He began teaching at California State University at Northridge in 1963 and is currently a faculty emeritus there. He taught as a visiting artist at numerous colleges throughout the U.S. including Ohio State University, Art institute of Chicago, Cranbrook Academy, to name a few. His style has been described as a cross between optical (aka op/kinetic art) and modern mandala art.

Fricano received many honors, including a Fulbright scholarship, Italy, 1960-1961; Louis Comfort Tiffany grantee, 1965; California State University research grantee, 1968, 69, 71, 74, 78, 79; California State University research grantee, 1988; and a John S. Guggenheim Memorial fellow, 1969-1970.

Fricano has exhibited extensively throughout the country and his work is in the collections of the Library of Congress, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Art Institute of Chicago, Brooklyn Museum and many others. He has also received two Guggenheim Foundation Fellowships in 1969 and 1970, a Fullbright Grant to Florence in 1960-61 and a Tiffany Residence Grant in 1965.
