BiographyMia Collis is an independent photographer currently based out of Nairobi. Having majored in Anthropology during university, she took particular interest in ethnographic photography and film.

Her photographic worked cover a range of human stories, most recently rats sniffing out TB and landmines in Tanzania, a conservation fight amid war in the DRC and empowered African women shaping their city. She has delivered work for International humanitarian & conservation organizations, publishing companies, media houses, ad agencies and celebrities.

Her ongoing project Sunday Best at Weekend Studio chronicles informal settlement residents revealing intricate stories about their lives as they sit in an old photo studio dressed in their best for formal portraits. The project divulges a tale of dignity and ritual and has recently won 11 international awards and continues to be exhibited worldwide.

In 2018, Mia had her first photographic book published, ‘The Un sung Heroes’, written by the recently deceased Dame Daphne Sheldrick in collaboration with the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. The book documents extraordinary human acts of bravery towards elephants. In 2016, She exhibited Zebra People at the National Museum of Kenya. Opened by Dr. Richard Leakey, her work documented a threatened ethnic minority using leading technology to save a zebra species on the brink of extinction.

Mia Collis has recently been recognized by National Geographic winning First Prize in the 2018 Photo Competition ~ People category, Lens Culture winning Top 50 Emerging Talents of 2018, The International Photography Awards becoming Event Photographer of the Year for the 2018, The Tokyo Foto Awards winning Gold prize in their Events Traditions and Cultures category, winner for LifeFramer’s Open Call 2018 competition and was selected by the Print Swap to feature in their Brooklyn exhibition last December 2018.

She has published her images in international media sources including The Guardian, Huffington Post, The Sunday Times, CNN, PBS Newshour, DieWelt, Borsen, Dagens Industri and the New York Times “Lens Blog”.
