BiographySheila Benow: A contemporary German/American painter and printmaker Sheila Benow studied art in New York at the Ethical Culture School, Sarah Lawrence College and the Art Students League. Besides creating original etchings and paintings, Benow has designed record album covers, illustrated children's books and has served as Director of Art at the Fleming School, New York. Between 1975 and 1984 the artist lived and worked in both New York and Munich. After that date she has lived in Germany and is a full member of BBK, Upper Bavaria.
During the 1970s and early 1980s the Associated American Artists, New York, commissioned Benow for original color etchings on numerous occasions. At this time this major publisher also issued original graphics by such artists as Clare Romano, Alex Katz, Denis Corrigan, Carl Grupp, Werner Drewes, Will Barnet, Virginia Tabor and Jim Dine. Dawn was commissioned by the Associated American Artists in 1981 in a limited, signed edition of 120 impressions.
Solo exhibitions of Benow's art have taken place in Dusseldorf, Regensburg, Hamburg, Luxembourg, Basel, Paris, Prague, Amsterdam, New York, Tokyo and elsewhere. Today public Museums in Dusseldorf, Nuremberg and Stockholm include examples of her art in their permanent collections.
