BiographyRobert Hodgins was born on 27 June 1920 in Dulwich, London. In 1938 he emigrated to South Africa, but after joining the Union Defence Force in 1940, served in Kenya until 1941, then in Egypt until 1944. That year he returned to England to be discharged after the end of the 2 nd World War in 1945.

In 1946 Hodgins began training at Goldsmiths College, London University, first as a teacher and then as an artist. In 1951 he obtained an Arts and Crafts Certificate, and in 1953 a National Diploma of Design, majoring in painting from Goldsmiths College.

After returning to South Africa he became in 1954, a lecturer at the School of Art, Pretoria Technical College. In 1962 Hodgins broadened his contribution to the art world by doing writing and criticism for Newscheck magazine. From 1966 to 1983 Hodgins lectured in the Fine Art Department at the Witwatersrand University. Thereafter he painted full-time. He has exhibited extensively in South Africa, London, France, the United States and Netherlands.
