Robert Dandarov
North Macedonia (formerly Macedonia), 1959
Department of Health and Human Services, School of Applied Art, Skopje, Macedonia, 1976. Associate of Applied Science, American Academy of Art, Chicago, 1978.
In 1978, Dandarov enrolled at the American Academy of Art in Chicago after it offered him a scholarship. He immersed himself in the traditional painting style of modern masters.
Though Dandarov has been living in New York City since 1981 (after completing his mandatory two years of Macedonian military service), he remains inculcated in the mythos of his native land.
Dandarov’s artist statement asserts, “my creative roots belong to Macedonia, land steeped in an amalgam of blood, myth, the smell of crushed basil, decaying monasteries and the poetic musing of a breed of people which seem to be a product of some unfinished alchemical process.”
“Every artist is a product of his geographical origins like a wine. I’ve been here for over 30 years but have not made one penny inspired by this American milieu, this atmosphere. The history’s so young. The modernity here I don’t have any connection with.”
