Joseph Obanubi
Nigeria, 1994
Obanubi’s practice, which synthesizes African culture and the promises of technology, can be placed within the context of Afrofuturism. His Technoheads series, which merges motorcycle parts with human bodies, proposes technology as the basis of contemporary human interaction, and suggests African metaphysical concepts of magic and altered reality. Within this ongoing series, the Lopsided Tale images were created for the charity WaterAid. They focus on the impact a lack of clean water can have on women and girls, who are usually responsible for the collection of water.
