BiographyArtist Statement

In my work I try to utilize simple techniques. This allows for freedom of ideas and process. Shape, form, use and color inform and question other possibilities. My work uses shape and form to inflate color. Working within the realm of function expands the potential. History of ceramics, painting and sculpture collide. Clay has a simple directness - it prints beautifully.

The field of ceramics is undergoing some exciting technical changes that will eventually by used by the ceramic artist. The wall needs to have a door.

Biography

Born in 1949 in Renton, Washington, 2014 American Craft Council Fellow, John Gill is a ceramic artist and educator. Receiving his BFA in 1973 from the Kansas City Art Institute, Gill immediately went on for his MFA, graduating from the New York State College of ceramics at Alfred University in 1975. Primarily known for his abstracted, geometric forms and brilliant colors, Gill’s work almost seems like a cubist painting in three dimensions. Currently a professor of ceramics at Alfred University, he received the SUNY Chancellor Award for Excellence in Teaching and is an active member of the International Academy of Ceramics. Represented by Harvey Meadows Gallery in Aspen, Kraushaar Gallery in New York, and Paul Kotula Project in Ferndale, Gill’s work is also included in numerous public and private collections such as the Newark Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Houston Museum, and the collection of Robert Pfannabecker. Gill lives and works in Alfred, New York. -- by American Craft Magazine
